The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
