Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
